Tartan is the new Black - MFW13

When it comes to menswear, Scotland has never really made its mark on the fashion map.

Suave Europeans, with their Italian tailoring and French flair, have been sniggering about our “men in skirts” for centuries.

But if this new collection from design house Moncler Gamme Bleu is anything to go by, it’s time to dust off your sporran and join the fashion pack.

During the Milan Fashion Week 2013, Moncler designer Thom Browne sent his male models down the catwalk to the soundtrack of Braveheart – and swathed in our national fabric.

Tartan trews, kilts, jackets, socks and even shoes were on show, while sporrans replaced man-bags.

Fendi, Jil Sander and Etro also feature it in their 2013 collections, so maybe it’s time to dig out those tartan trews and show them how it’s done. This could be a good update for junior-style punk looks.

While tartan wasn’t always a fashionable style for men, plenty of famous faces have sported the look over the years.
